Hair loss is common among people. It's incontrovertibly
become a matter of much concern, not only among men of all ages, but also among a growing number of
women.
95 percent of hair loss is the
result of androgenetic alopecia (also known as
male pattern
baldness in men). It affects roughly 40 million
men in the United States today.
DHT a male hormone is
developmentally important early in a man’s life. However, it
appears to be a cause of hair loss as men age. Approximately
25 percent of men begin balding by age 30; two-thirds begin
balding by age 60. DHT
shrinks the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible
hair. Researchers have found that men with
male pattern hair loss have increased levels of DHT in the
balding area of their scalps.
Human hair normally follows a cycle of growth, falling out,
and new growth. But increased levels of DHT are believed to
contribute to the shortening of the growth phase and a
shortening of the time it takes for the hair to fall out. This
results in thinning of the hair on the scalp.
For women hair loss can be even more troubling than for men.
Female hair loss is not generally accepted as part of the
normal aging process. Society has come to expect a thick,
luxurious head of hair as part of the attractiveness in women.
Female
pattern baldness (FPB) affects 1 out of every 4 women in
the United States. And, it does appear to be as common for
women as for men.
One cause of hair loss in women can be hormonal imbalances.
Having an overactive or under active thyroid gland may cause
thinning hair. Treating the thyroid disease will usually help
this type of female hair loss. Most often, menopause is the
most frequent time for female hair loss to become apparent if
female hormones
(estrogens), is out of balance but corrected, the hair loss
should stop.
While men and women can both experience pattern baldness, they
typically do not lose their hair in the same order or
appearance.
